If a new enclosed gooseneck trailer is out of your price range, it may be possible to find a used trailer that will fit your needs. When buying a used trailer it is important to be careful in inspecting the trailer to make sure that you are getting a good deal and a road worthy trailer. Often times the cost of bringing a used trailer to a basic safety standard plus the acquisition cost may exceed the cost of just buying new.
Inspect the gooseneck hitch to make sure it is in good working order and can be adjusted to fit the height of your tow vehicle. Make sure there is not excessive rust as to weaken the coupler. If the coupler breaks due to weakness caused by excessive rust, the trailer will become unfastened from your tow vehicle which can be both costly and dangerous.
There are several areas to inspect that people often overlook when buying a used trailer because they are not easily visible. First remove the tires and make sure the brakes are in good working order. Getting a complete brake job can cost over a thousand dollars on a heavy triple axle trailer. In addition if the wiring is not in good working order, attempting to reconnect the wires can be a very difficult and expensive task. Examine the tread left on the tires. Six new tires for a heavy triple axle trailer can also cost over a thousand dollars. These two items alone can be very costly to replace if they are not road worthy. One final major area to inspect is the electrical system. Make sure all electrical outlets work, all lighting systems and switches function and any electrical appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners work as well. Replacing appliances can be very costly. If you follow some of these simple steps, you can help ensure your used enclosed gooseneck trailer purchase will be a good value. If you plan to haul cargo, take a look at our Enclosed Gooseneck Cargo Trailer page.
